Little Ringed Plover
photo by Stuart Piner, Myerscough Quarry, Lancs

This project was initiated to study the expanding Little Ringed Plover population in the gravel pits associated with the middle section of the River Ure. To individually identify birds, the BTO gave permission for colour rings to be used. The value of colour ringing is demonstrated by several sightings in 2000 from Shropshire, Norfolk and South Yorkshire. Also a southerly migrating bird was identified in the Gironde, France in 2000.
